Slip-i-dee-do-dah – Day 7

Sunday morning we woke bleary eyed after tag teaming the past two nights with our bronchitis ridden daughter.  Monitoring fever, listening to breathing, consoling and hugging our sick kid, it immediately made me grateful I lived through their newborn years with relatively no health scares, cause it’s scary.

So, my husband and I agreed, Sunday was a coffee morning.  We used the last bit of our locally roasted Avoca beans that had been taunting me for the past week for the perfect pour over.  I toasted up my beloved Cinnamon Raisin Ezekiel bread, spread one side with coconut oil and the other with Nuttzo (NP).  We sat down at our dining table, our kids happily watching something terrible on Netflix, and we thoroughly enjoyed our tumble off the Clean wagon.

Now, where does that leave us after enjoying all the contraband?  Did we fail?  Are we losers?

We don’t think so, actually it was a great experience.  The coffee made me feel all hyped up and I had trouble taking a deep breath – never felt that before, or maybe had never been aware of it?  While the preparation and that lovely smell were divine the after effects had me sincerely questioning if coffee would make it back into my daily rotation post-Clean. We were happy to jump back into Clean after the morning’s indulgence.  I even made the best smoothie I may have ever created (recipe tomorrow).  In conclusion, I think this was a good slip for us, of course, time will tell, stay tuned to see if we can make it to our finish line.

Better than.

A small list of just a few things I believe are truly better than their less healthy versions.

1.  Cookie dough bites by weelicious for goop.  I’ve made these 4 times since GP posted this treat in October, a new family sweet treat favorite, sooooo easy and dairy free, gluten free, soy free!

2.  The breakfast taco – Sautéed spinach, mushroom and grilled onion breakfast taco.  The old egg, cheese, bacon stand-by is just boring in comparison.  Even better my Whole Foods opened a taco bar and I can get this tasty delight made to order….every Whole Foods has a suggestion box – take advantage!

3.  Chocolate milkshake from My New Roots – the dairy, sugar laden competition honestly does not do it for me any more.  My own spin – instead of her 1/4 cup hemp seeds, I use 2 TBS almond butter and 1/2 avocado instead of a whole, using a whole avocado makes it too thick IMO.

“Raw Chocolate Milkshake Miracle
Ingredients:
• ¼ cup hemp seeds (or use soaked almonds, cashews, sunflower seeds etc.)
• 2 heaping Tbsp. raw cacao powder
• 1 Avocado
• 1 very large frozen banana (or 2 small)
• 2 Tbsp. raw honey, agave, or maple syrup
• dash sea salt
• ¾ – 1 cup water
• 4 ice cubes

Directions:
1. Blend all the ingredients together; add water to thin if desired. It’s a thick one, folks!
And although the urge to chug may take over, don’t forget to “chew” your milkshake for better digestion! Very important.”

4.  Cinnamon raisin Ezekiel bread, someone recently offered me the Sarah Lee version……nasty.  Slather on some almond butter and it’s one delightful treat.

5.  Hummus Chips – Simply 7 Sea Salt is my preferred brand, kind of like a Funnion but not as scary and super fun to crunch.  We add them to chili, salads, anything that benefits from some crunch. Boulder Canyon makes a good version too.

Happy (healthier) snacking and Happy Friday.

What are you, Nuttzo?

Purple Nuttzo:

1 cup coconut water

1 handful ice

1 cup frozen blueberries

1 date (pitted)

2 tbs Nuttzo NP

What is Nuttzo you ask?  Nuttzo is my new fun thing to dump in smoothies or smother on Ezekiel bread or spread on apples, it’s got: Cashews, Almonds, Brazil Nuts, Hazelnuts, Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds and Pumpkin Seeds ALL of which are organic and full of Omega-3’s.  The other thing that’s nuts about this product is the price, it’s like $16.00, BUT it’s pretty much a meal in a couple tablespoons, so maybe it’s not so bad.  They’ve got a few other flavors like “Dark Chocolate” that have an amazing nutty blend as well- that one is calling my name…after this whole rancid peanut thing passes that is! Until then I’m good with the Nuttzo NP (no peanut).
